Box Office: Harry Potter Shatters Records for #1 Spot

We all knew “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows pt ll” would be big, but I don’t think we anyone expected this.  Starting with its midnight screening, the last installment for the Harry Potter film series busted out of the gate by bringing in $43.5 million breaking the previous midnight screening record of $30 million held by “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse”, Harry Potter ended with an opening day total of  $91.1 million.

Deathly Hallows pt ll continued its box office takeover with a new record for a 3 day opening of $169.2 million, officially beating out the previous record of $158.4 million held by “The Dark Knight”.  If you combine Harry Potter’s domestic 3 day take with the $312.3 million foreign opening numbers, Harry Potter becomes the worlds best opening film, bringing in a worldwide total of $481.4 million.

The only other new release this weekend was Disney’s “Winnie the Pooh” which debuted at #6 with $7.8 million, which considering who it was up against is not bad for a beloved cartoon character.

Overall, Harry Potter proved that at the end of the day, fan will always love the boy wizard who lived.
