Project Runway: The Art of the Matter

After last weeks drama filled team challenge, the designers got to work solo this week as they were sent to the Harlem School of the Arts to get inspiration for this weeks challenge.  Each designer was paired with a student to create a painting that would they would then use as the inspiration for an Avant Guarde look.

For the designers this should be a dream challenge, they are able pull out all those crazy, creative ideas and turn them into something stunning.  This proved to be a challenge for several designers including Joshua C whose painting was a wolf and his original look was something I would expect to see in “Into The Woods”, Oliver – who likes to keep his looks clean and simple to start off with had no clue what to due and at one point tried to glue his garment to the model which Tim Gunn quickly pointed out was against the rules, Bert looked like he was attaching children toys to his jumpsuit.  At first I wasn’t a fan of Anthony Ryan’s look but once the finished look went down the runway, I was sold.

Joining the judges this week were Zanna Roberts (Sr. Fashion Editor of Marie Claire) who sat in for Nina Garcia and guest judge was designer Kenneth Cole joined Michael Kors and Heidi Klum.  The bottom 3 was who you would expect: Joshua C, Oliver and Bert and the Top 3 included Anthony Ryan, Joshua M, and Laura.  After praising both Joshua M and Anthony Ryan (Laura got some good comments but no high praise) on their looks, the judges changed their tune for the bottom 3 calling Joshua C’s look a cross between a Victorian barmaid and a dominatrix and letting Oliver know that is lack of imagination, construction (with exception of the bodice) and color choices made the outfit boring and uninspired.  Bert’s outfit was just laughed at.

In the end Anthony Ryan was named the victor of this week and has been granted immunity for next week.  It came down to Joshua C and Oliver in the bottom 2 (Bert skated by due to Heidi’s strange like for his look) and in the end, it was Joshua C’s black & white dominatrix that got his eliminated for a second time from Project Runway.
