Exclusive: Interview With The Voice Season 1 Winner Javier Colon

As America gets ready to crown a winner for season 2 of The Voice, we had a chance to talk to season 1 winner Javier Colon.

Javier has a new album “Come Through For You” (which was released in November 2012) and he recently performed his latest single “A Drop in the Ocean” on this past weeks semi-final results episode.  We got a chance to ask him about how is life has changed since winning season 1 and what is next.

Entertainista: First off, just want to congratulate you on all your success, you were my favorite from season one of The Voice, voted for you in each round. How has your life changed since winning The Voice last year?
Javier Colon: Thank you very much and for supporting me. My life is completely different. I was really struggling before the voice. Financially and professionally my future didn’t look good. Now there is light at the end of the tunnel. I have a career to build upon. I have a fanbase to also built upon. The future is much brighter than it was a year ago.

Entertainista: You wrote 6 tracks off your album “Come Through For You”, what is your inspiration when writing?
Javier: I get a lot of my inspiration from my family and friends. From things I go through or see someone else go through. Songs like “Come Through For You” and “Echo” really come from the heart and talk about how difficult it is to be in this business and maintaining a somewhat “normal” family life. The songs thy I wrote about my family are always the ones that I am most connected to.
Entertainista: How did “A Drop in the Ocean” come about?
Javier: Someone from my label, Universal Republic, played the song for me when I was working on my new album. I loved it immediately and thought it would be a great fit with what we already had. Ron Pope wrote the song and is an amazing artist as well. I LOVE Ron’s music and was honored to have this song on my album.
Entertainista: What is next for you? When can we expect your next album?
Javier: Not sure when we’ll start work on the next one. Right now I’m focused on touring and getting the music from “Come Through For You” out to the masses. If things take off, it might be at least another year before I go into the studio to work on another one.
Entertainista: What do you think of the current contestants on The Voice? Any favorites?
Javier: The contestants this year are amazing. I absolutely love this final 4 of Juliet, Tony, Jermaine and Chris. That is a really solid group right there. Looking forward to seeing what happens next week.
Entertainista: What advice would you give to any aspiring musicians?
Javier: Never give up!!! I almost gave up so many times. I tried to pass on “The Voice” audition 3 times before I ended up auditioning. I didn’t think it would lead to anything and was giving up. My brother along with some of my good friends talked me into it and here I am.

Entertainista: Do you still keep in contact with your coach Adam Levine?
Javier: I absolutely still talk to Adam. He has been a great resource throughout all this. I can text or call him and he’s always got some great advice for me. This business is insanely difficult and to have someone like adam in my corner really helps
