Box Office: The Avengers Kick Off with $200 Million Opening Weekend

Marvel’s “The Avengers” just beat down every opening weekend record including “The Dark Knight” and last summer’s “Happy Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 2″.

Just how much did Joss Whedon’s “The Avengers” – which teams up Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye – make in its domestic opening weekend….a staggering $200.3 million, which also sets a new record.  The film opened in foreign markets last week and already has a total of $441.5 million, which brings “The Avengers” worldwide total to $641.8 million in less than 14 days.

Elsewhere in movie land the numbers are bleak, “Think Like A Man” slipped down to #2 with $8 million while “The Hunger Games” landed at #3 with $5.7 million.  Zac Efron’s “The Lucky One” stayed at #4 with 5.5 million and last weeks second place “Pirates: A Band of Misfits” rounds out the Top 5 with $5.4 million.
