Looks a re-telling of a classic fairly tale mixed with the fabulous Charlize Theron is a winning formula for the weekends box office.
Universal Pictures SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN opened as the #1 movie this weekend with $56.2 million. Overall a $56 million opening is good, but when your budget is $170 million, that number can look a little soft. Oversea’s SWATH opened with $39.3 million, giving the film a worldwide total of $95.5 million. We should also note that the last TWIGHT SAGA film Breaking Dawn pt 1 opened with $138.1 million. You can see our review of SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN here.
Last weeks number one MIB 3 moved down one spot to #2 with 29.3 million. The other film starring Chris Hemsworth THE AVENGERS keeps bringing in the cash adding another $20.2 million to its massive intake. The comic book film has brought in $1.3 billion worldwide and $552.7 million domestically.
BATTLESHIP continues to sink at the box office, only earning $4.8 million this past weekend. This brings the films total to a low $55 million (SWATH earned more than that in just 3 days) making this the lowest grossing big budget film of the summer (so far). Rounding out the top 5 is the comedy THE DICTATOR, which added $ 4.7 million to is domestic total.
