Last night at the Beverly Hill Hilton, the 39th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards (hosted by Anderson Cooper and Oscar the Grouch) were held to a crowd the boasted some of Daytime’s best stars.
The big winner of the night was long running (and one of the few remaining on air) Soap Opera GENERAL HOSPITAL, the show took home the big prize of Outstanding Drama Series along with Outstanding Lead Actor (Anthony Geary, as Luke Spencer), Outstanding Supporting Actor (Jonathan Jackson, as Lucky Spencer), and Outstanding Supporting Actress (Nancy Lee Grahn, as Alexis Davis). Susan Lucci (All My Children) and Erika Slezak (One Life to Live) were on hand to pay special tribute to their shows that were canceled earlier this year.
In the non-Soap categories, Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa took home two Emmy’s for Outstanding Talk Show Host and Outstanding Talk Show/Entertainment for LIVE WITH REGIS & KELLY. Bobby Flay picked up in Emmy for his show BOBBY FLAY’S BARBECUE ADDITION.
While ABC’s GOOD MORNING AMERICA (GMA) might have beat NBC’s TODAY show in the ratings for the first time 10 years, that wasn’t enough to land then the Emmy award for Outstanding Morning Program as TODAY nabbed its 3rd award. This now brings the total to 3 Emmy awards each for the competing morning shows, let the battle continue.
In children’s programming, PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR won Outstanding Children’s Animated Program while Kevin Clash as Elmo won for SESAME STREET as Outstanding Performance in a Children’s series.
