Q&A With Breaking Pointe Star Katie Martin

Q&A With Breaking Pointe Star Katie Martin

Breaking Pointe (BP) is the new captivating CW series which takes us inside the walls of the prestigious Ballet West for the first time.  Professional ballet dancer Katie Martin stands out from the very first episode. Despite her physical strength and positive attitude there’s something vulnerable about her that draws viewers in. She’s sweet and seems incredibly genuine, possesses all the grace and beauty one would expect from a ballet dancer, and she has a really hot boyfriend who can’t see straight over her. She’s the whole package; that’s why it’s shocking that she is cut from Ballet West at the end of this very same pilot episode.

I reached out to Katie to see if she’d be interested in doing a Q&A, this firecracker couldn’t have been more accommodating.

How the Filming of BP’s Affected Her Life…

Q.

How did the filming of BP affect your everyday routine?

A.

In my opinion the filming improved our everyday lifestyle.  The crew helped us dancers stay on our toes, they added lighting which brightened up the studios and even cleaned a little :) ha I enjoyed having the crew around, it has been a really great experience.

Q.

How did being part of the show affect you during contract season?

A.

I knew signing up for the show that I was in a hire or fire position.  In my position at Ballet West I either had to be promoted, or let go. I had a gut feeling I wasn’t getting a contract, and I came to terms with that in the fall.  So I agreed to the show because I wanted America to realize ballet is real, it’s an honored career and something we need to pay more attention to.

Q.

Was there ever a point where you wished you weren’t a part of BP? (When / Why)

A.

Honestly, I’ve loved every second. I really hope there is a season 2 and I’m part of it.

Q.

How did being on BP affect how you handled the auditioning process?

A.

Being on BP was interesting with the audition process.  I didn’t know if I should voice the show to any future Artistic Director because I didn’t know if it would affect my audition in a positive or negative way. Needless to say out of the 8 companies I auditioned for, Ballet Idaho was the only company who knew of “Breaking Pointe” and that’s because BBC Worldwide Productions filmed it.

Q.

Did being on the show affect your decision to audition elsewhere? (Why / How)

A.

No, I always wanted to audition. I know I am good enough to have a successful career elsewhere.

How BP Has Affected Her Relationships…

Q.

At this point in the show you and Ron seem very much in love and very supportive of one another – but the stresses of an inevitable long distance relationship are simmering. Where are you two at now in your relationship?

A.

Ron and I have always shown support for each other with ballet. It is nice dating a dancer because he understands what I’m going through, but it’s also hard because we were progressing at different speeds at Ballet West. Ron was/is traveling up the ladder and I was sliding down…as the status of our relationship, you’ll have to keep watching.

Q.

How did BP affect your and Ron’s relationship?

A.

BP positively affected my relationship with Ronald.  The cameras asked us “what do we do for fun?” and it made us realize we should go on more dates (yay). So we invited them to the coffee shop and on walks and those kinds of things. It was nice.

Q.

How did BP affect your and Beckanne’s* relationship?
*Beckanne is a fellow Breaking Pointe star; she is also Katie’s best friend and roommate*

A.

BP had a positive affect on Beckanne and my relationship too.  I’m in a huge Greys Anatomy phase (thats lasted 8 years now) and I like to think of us like Christina and Meredith, we share each other all our secrets and just understand each other.

Q.

Did Ron and Beckanne’s renewed contracts affect your relationships with them? (How?)

A.

Honestly, a little.  It is hard to be happy for someone, yet deep down sad for yourself.  And I think they felt similar feelings, sad for me but deep down excited for themselves..and they should be happy!!!

Q.

How has the show affected your family?

A.

My family loves it! They are %100 team katie.  They know I’ve always wanted to be on TV and always wanted to be a ballerina.  And I’m proud to say they have seen me in both.  Hopefully both careers only get better from here!

Katie’s Life Post Breaking Pointe…

Q.

If there is a 2nd season of BP will & how would you be a part of it?

A.

We have not been informed of a second season or its details.  In my high hopes and opinions I would love to have a second season.  I’d love to be part of it, tie in my new life with my old.  Show how I am doing, then visiting Ballet West and seeing how they are doing. Oh this is so hard to explain without giving anything away.

Q.

What opportunities have arisen since the airing of BP?

A.

Well, this interview! And I was also interviewed by Dance Spirit Magazine and my local PATCH newspaper as well on the news with Ronald in San Diego.  Someone at Walgreens recognized me!..and that was a first. I’m hoping that this summer I’ll be able to get a couple Ballet Guesting jobs. Maybe a commercial!?

Q.

Would you go back to Ballet West if they were to offer you another 1-year contract?

A.

I don’t know..

Q.

Have you been feeling “team Katie” support? (How / How has it affected you)

A.

Yes I have.  A lot of people have been reaching out to me by all social outlets (twitter, facebook and instagram).  It’s been very flattering.

Q.

In what unexpected ways did BP affect your life?

A.

BP gave me a lot of confidence and I think this spring would have been a lot harder to deal with if I didn’t have BP to take my mind off things.

Q.

What’s the biggest thing you’ll take away from being a part of BP?

A.

I was able to be on TV (secret goal) and show ballet to America.  What else could a girl want?!

Q.

If viewers could only take away one thing from Breaking Pointe what would you hope it to be?

A.

I would hope that on their next free weekend, they look up their local ballet company and get pretty and see the ballet.

General Questions…

Q.

Have you experienced / noticed a new surge of interest in ballet since the show has premiered? (How)

A.

I’ve noticed a lot of peoples twitter responses and facebook posts say they want to take ballet, or are starting ballet up again.

Q.

What is the biggest misconception about ballet dancers?

A.

That our profession isn’t real. I have told people “I’m a professional ballerina” and their response was “Oh, but what’s your real job, what do you actually do?”.

Q.

Would you ever do reality television again?

A.

Yes I would!

Q.

Is there anything else readers should know about you and or how the show affected your life?

A.

Power of positive thinking!!!

Reader’s Q’s!:

Q.

Where did you grow up dancing?

A.

In the suburbs of Chicago.  My early early years were at Talent Forum, then I moved to Dancenter North for the greater half of my training (Libertyville).  After high school I was in the Boston Ballet School, then Point Park University for one year and off to Salt Lake City!

Q.

What do you want to name your children one day?

A.

:) hum. For boys: Jack, Charles and James. Girls: Elizabeth or Coriell
