What might be the most anticipated event in all of the London 2012 Olympics is the Women’s Gymnastics, and the U.S.A “Fab Five” is in the running to win gold in the Team All-Around event.
If the “Fab Five”, which includes McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman, Kyla Ross, and Jordyn Wieber, can win the gold medal in the All-Around event, it will be the first time since the 1996 “magnificent 7′ took the medal in the summer Atlanta Games.
After today’s qualifying round, Team USA have managed to hold off the Russians, Romanians and Chinese to land on top of the results board and if they perform as well as they did today on Tuesday, then chances are U.S.A. is looking at its second ever gold medal in this event.
The surprising results of today’s qualifying round is that current World Champion Jordyn Wieber did NOT qualify for the individual all-around competition. In the individual all-around each country is allowed to send two gymnasts and up until the end of todays qualifications the heavy favorites were Gabby Douglas and Weiber, but after a few mistakes during her routines, Weiber finished off with the fourth-best individual score in qualifying. Instead Team USA will send Gabby Douglas and team capitan Aly Raisman into the individual all-round events.
Team USA’s “Fab Five” finished their qualifying rounds with 181.863 points. The score board will start from scratch at the medal event on Tuesday, July 31 at 11:30am London Time. Tune into NBC primetime or live stream on NBC.com to watch live.
