Michelle Williams made an unforgettable impression this year, at the 84th Academy Awards, in a stunning red Louis Vuitton peplum gown. Ever since, designs seem to be peplum-obsessed, and this strategically placed piece of extra fabric is going to be huge in the coming season!
I must admit, at first I was unsure; they’re kind of silly looking. Here’s what won me over. Not only are they fun and flirty, but they’re extremely flattering to the female shape. Most peplums come out from a tapered waist; emphasizing the natural narrowing of the waist and the illusion of an exaggerated hour-glass-figure. ModCloth’s Sunny Attitude Top (#1 $42.99) does just this and its peplum ripples down, subtly softening the look. Forever21 similarly emphasizes the hourglass shape by dropping a longer peplum from its Asymmetrical Peplum Dress (#2 $27.80).
Finally, Bebe’s Peplum Knit Pencil Skirt (#3 $69) drops the peplum down from the waist to the hips. This exaggerates the natural curve of the body, creating the illusion of a more voluptuous silhouette.
Peplums are great because you can pair them with skirts and pants alike! The styling options are endless and can only re-energize your wardrobe.
Finally, my last reason to go peplum this fall: it’s the perfect way to hide a bloated belly…win!
