There is a world of difference between the Upper East Side where the Metropolitan Museum of Art resides and the former home of CBGB in the East Village but tonight punk ruled as the annual Costume Institute Gala (the Met Gala) kicked off it’s Punk: Chaos To Couture exhibit.
When I first heard the theme I was excited to see which celebrities and designers rose to the challenge to bring punk fashion forward and we were not disappointed. Sarah Jessica Parker best brought out her inner punk girl in a Giles Deacon gown, custom Christian Louboutin, and a killer mohawk headpiece by Philip Treacy. While Madonna may be known as the Queen of Pop, she has had plenty of punk moments in life embodied tonight’s theme by wearing Givenchy while Christina Ricci went with a bit more subtle punk in the Queen of Punk fashion, Vivienne Westwood.
Model Cara Delevingne went more modern rocker punk in a custom Burberry plunging neckline gown covered in gold spikes. Earlier in the evening on the red carpet it was said that pink=punk and with that in mind no one went more punk that Julie Macklowe in a custom pink and black gown by our dear friend Zang Toi. Julie even went with pink hair and black lipstick to amp up the look.
