MTV‘s latest installment of the Video Music Awards took place across the bridge in Brooklyn tonight and during the pre-show it was clear tonight was all about Justin Timberlake and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Timberlake picked up 2 awards for Direction & Editing while Mackelemore/Lewis picked up Best Cinematography before the night officially began and things just picked up from there. During the actual awards Macklemore/Lewis picked up Best Hip-Hop and Best Video with a Social Message while Timberlake took home Video of the Year for Mirrors.
Justin Timberlake also took home the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award. Presented to JT by his bro-mance buddy Jimmy Fallon, Timberlake performed bits of all of singles working backwards in way from “Take Back the Night” down to “Senorita” and ended with “Mirrors”. However it was his brief reunion with NSYNC pals Lance Bass, J.C. Chasez, Joey Fatone and Chris Kirkpatrick for a performance that included “Girlfriend” off their Celebrity Album and a recreation of sorts of their 2001 VMA performance of “Bye, Bye, Bye”. Timberlake acknowledged the group while accepting the award saying “…half of the moon mans I won, I won with those four guys over there”.
Other winners included 30 Seconds to Mars picking up Best Rock Video, Bruno Mars won Best Male Video while Taylor Swift won Best Female Video for “I Knew You Were Trouble”, thankfully she made it through her acceptance speech without any issues. Selena Gomez won her first ever Moon Man in the Best Pop Video category while One Direction took home the Best Summer Song award.
Lady Gaga opened the show with a performance of her new single “Applause” and while it was no “Paparazzi” it was decent. Miley Cyrus
got on stage in a body suit made of skinned teddy bears along with giant furry bear backpacks to perform her single “We Can’t Stop” followed the most mis-
matched duet since well ever of “Blurred Lines” with Robin Thicke. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis featuring Mary Lambert and Jennifer Hudson gave a moving performance of “Same Love” and Kanye West performed but don’t ask me what the song was about, there was so much bleeping it sounded like the TV was cutting out. Katy Perry closed out the show performing her new single “Roar” below the Brooklyn Bridge.
