BoxOffice: Alices Gives RPatz a Beat Down
What did this weekends box offices total’s prove? Well one Johnny Depp and company can still beat your ass in the box office any time and two Rob Pattinson without the word ‘Twilight’ attached to a film title, well isn’t exactly record breaking.
‘Alice in Wonderland’ raked in another $62 million dollars this weekend, keeping it at the number one spot and giving the film $208 million overall domestic.
‘Remember Me’ RPatz’s first post-Twilight endeavor came in at number four with $8.3 million. Now considering the film only cost $16 million to make, I’m positive the film will most likely rake in around $18 million during its box-office run. However, even with the fact that the film deals with 9/11 tragic events, 84% of the movie goers were female. We’ll have to see how Kristen Stewart’s film ‘The Runaways’ does when it opens in March.
Matt Damon however bombed this weekend. His $100+ million production costing ‘The Green Zone’ brought in $14.5 million, but was still good enough for number 2. This is most likely the lowest grossest Damon Movie in the last 5yrs. Both ‘Cop Out’ and ‘The Crazies’ had better opening weekends.
Rounding out the top 5, ‘Shes Out of My League’ came in at number 3 with $9.6 million and ‘Shutter Island’ finishes at number five with $8.1 million.
Weekends Top 10:
Next weekend in wide release we have ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’, ‘The Bounty Hunter’ and ‘Repo Man’. In select cities the Kristen Stewart/Dakota Fanning flick ‘The Runaways’ based on the true life story of Joan Jett’s all girl rock/punk band opens (wide release is in March).
‘Alice in Wonderland’ Takes #1 with $116.3 Million
‘Alice in Wonderland’ has set a new record for March opening weekends by bringing in an estimated $116.3 million.
Furthermore, ‘Alice in Wonderland’ set a new record for IMAX opening weekends. IMAX which pulled ‘Avatar’ from all their screens in order to show ‘Alice’ brought in $11.9 million on its 188 screens this weekend.
‘Brooklyn’s Finest’ this weekends other new release came in at a very distant second place with $13.5 million. Last weekends top spot ‘Shutter Island’ ranked #3 with $13.3 million, Kevin Smith’s ‘Cop Out’ at #4 with 9.1 million, and ‘Avatar’ rounds out the top 5 with $7.7 million.
Full Top 10:
Next weekend we have Rob Pattinson’s non-Twilight film ‘Remember Me’, Matt Damon’s ‘Green Zone’, ‘Our Family Wedding, and ‘She’s Out of My League’.
Will ‘Alice’ keep the top spot or will RPatz be able to prove his star power without playing a vampire?
Alice in Wonderland $40million Friday Gross
Disney and Tim Burton should be very happy right now. ’Alice in Wonderland’ top Friday’s box office with $40 million, putting it on track to not only take #1, but also smash March opening weekend records with an estimated gross of $110-140 million. ’300′ currently holds the record with $71 million.
This weekends other new release ‘Brooklyn’s Finest’ grossed $4.7 million and ‘Shutter Island’ rounds out Friday’s top 3 with $3.9 million.
We’ll have the final tallies tomorrow evening!!
Johnny Depp’s Mad Hatter on EW Cover
With only a week left till Tim Burton’s ‘Alice In Wonderland’ opens in theaters on March 5th, Entertainment Weekly is celebrating by having Johnny Depp’s Mad Hatter grace the cover for for this weeks issue (available on news stands 3/26).
In the issue both Johnny and director Tim Burton talk about their 20yr movie relationship.
We asked about Alice being in 3-D Johnny had this to say “I’m actually unable to see 3-D,” he says. “I’ve got a weird thing where I don’t see properly out of my left eye, so I truly can’t see 3-D.” Then again, he never likes watching himself onscreen anyway. “So I have an excuse this time.”
Check out everything we have on ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and be sure to check in out in IMAX 3-D on March 5th.
